BoydLast year, we reported that long-time Supreme Court Clerk of Court, Christie Cameron Roeder, was retiring in June 2016.  Since that time, the Supreme Court has been on the hunt for the next Clerk of the North Carolina Supreme Court.  On Monday, Chief Justice Martin announced that J. Bryan Boyd will be appointed as Clerk of Court effective June 1, 2016.  According to the press release, Boyd

is a professor of law with Campbell University, where he has worked since 2003. Most recently, Boyd completed a term as the associate dean for Academic Affairs. He has also served as an assistant professor of legal writing and as the director of the Professional Skills Program at the law school. Prior to joining Campbell, Boyd served as a judicial law clerk to Justice Robert H. Edmunds Jr. at the Supreme Court.

Professor Boyd has taught several different courses at Campbell, including legal research and writing, appellate and trial advocacy, courses on criminal law and procedure, and a seminar on the North Carolina Supreme Court.  Professor Boyd has a reputation as an excellent teacher, which will serve him well as he fields countless calls from attorneys and the public on appellate practice and procedure.  He “was recognized three times by the student body as the most outstanding professor of the year, including his very first year teaching at Campbell Law School.”

Professor Boyd likely will play a key role in our state courts’ eventually transition to an integrated efiling system.

Congratulations to the soon-to-be Honorable J. Bryan Boyd on his appointment to serve as the fifteenth Clerk of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
